Emergency professionals work with Sentinet3

There are certain professions where emergencies are always on the agenda, in which nothing can be left to last minute improvisation and the margin for error must, if not completely eliminated (an almost unattainable goal no matter what the activity), be at least reduced to a minimum.

For this reason, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome chose Sentinet3 some three years ago and still considers it as the operational guarantee of its computer network.

"Prior to Sentinet3, we had no monitoring system - says Dr. Lucio Badiali, Head of Information Services and Networks of the National Earthquake Centre at the Institute - but we knew that defending our network had become a priority".

Indeed, the Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology’s computer system is a very complex structure, with 60 machines, 230 services and around 600 mail accounts, plus a large variety of highly integrated software operations.

"We are emergency professionals - clarifies Badiali - and we cannot be held back in an emergency because of computer network problems. Therefore,we tested Sentinet3 and were impressed by its powerful functionality, which ultimately made it our preferred option over other competitor products. We needed a highly customisable monitoring system and Sentinet3 was delivered with a series of modules already installed to deal with potential network problems. This makes it a very powerful product".

Among Sentinet 3’s features of it is worth mentioning its proactivity, i.e. its ability to anticipate any network problems:

"The monitoring system - confirms Badiali - also plays a preventative role: it can inform us via email or SMS of potentially dangerous situations, even before they become real problems. Finally, we were surprised by its ability to independently solve many network problems: in fact, log analysis revealed that Sentinet3 solved numerous problems by itself".

All this represents double savings for users: time, i.e. more time can be devoted to the Institute, and most importantly, money:

"Sentinet3 cost- comments Badiali - is well below the market average, and also no further licenses are required to extend monitoring to new machines".

This aspect is very important especially over recent months - among other things, tragically marked by the earthquake in Abruzzo, which has thrown the Institute into a permanent emergency management situation - also for the recent commissioning of the videowall, a wall composed entirely of monitors showing data from different sources, including maps, particular seismic situations, waveforms (an advancement of traditional rollers) and many other kinds of relevant information.

A highly innovative step that the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology could perform with the confidence that results from Sentinet3monitoring.
