Starting point

An autonomous network, complex to manage

The Department for Development and Economic Cohesion is the body of the Ministry of Economic Development responsible for planning and managing funds for disadvantaged areas of Italy. It has full management autonomy over its own IT network within the Ministry.

“Our work ranges from managing hardware and software to supporting the Department’s approximately 500 users. The management complexity also stems from the fact that we have central servers on Windows, Linux and Unix AIX platforms, and we still use the mainframe platform. In light of all this, it was essential to adopt a monitoring system to control the operation and continuity of hundreds of services.”

Initially the Department had relied on IBM Director, which soon proved too complex to use: network management was anything but simplified. After careful evaluation, the choice fell on Sentinet³.

The solution

Around 400 services under control

Sentinet³ met the Department’s needs and was compatible with its budget. Since then it has monitored the Department’s IT network, keeping around 400 services under control and adapting to new needs as they arise.

Over the course of the year management evolved, and Sentinet³ coped with the growth in activities and in the number of machines. At the time of the project, moreover, the Sentinet³ licensing model did not involve additional costs to extend monitoring to new machines.

“With Sentinet³ it was love at first sight, because it perfectly met our needs. Above all, we were impressed by the reliability and ease of use of this product. From time to time we even discover new ways of using it that we had not initially considered.”

Results

A more than positive assessment

  • IT staff time better spent, on activities that are critical for projects.
  • Emergencies reported in real time, with faster and more effective service recovery.
  • Flexibility in the face of evolving management and a growing number of machines.

Future plans

The Department planned to extend its use of Sentinet³: first with environmental monitoring functions, such as temperature and power supply parameters; then, within two or three years, with full redundancy of the two data centres in an active configuration on both sites, which would have required doubling the monitoring system with a second Sentinet³.
